AC Trip Report 10/9

Usually I post these reports when I make a big win, but not this time. It was not a winning day yet it was interesting.

I started out in the morning at The Borgata sitting short stacked at a 2/5NL table. I lost my first $100 buy-in when I re-raised all-in for $55 with AQs. I know that the hand is generally not strong enough for this play but the 2 players in the pot were very loose so I put them on weaker hands and I was right. The guy who won the pot had KJ and took it down when he hit a J on the turn. I bought back in for another $100 and managed to win a couple of pots and get myself back to only a $28 loss.

Next was the 50+10 w 1/AO MTT. It was the toughest MTT I ever played in. About 130 players all seemed to be playing a solid game. I only got 3 raising hands in the whole tourney and that would have been enough if my QQ had held up against A5 when I put him all-in. The most memorable hand happened on the last hand before the first break and add-on period. I got QQ in late position. An extremely loose player raised in front of me to 600T, which was 3 BB. I had a choice here I could re-raise to around 1500T+ which would have left me with about 2500 chips or shove it all-in. Since he seemed like he liked to gamble I shoved and he called with AK and my queens held up to double me up. After 3 hours, I am finally sent to the rail with over 80 players still in the hunt!

Now this is the interesting part of the day. I decide I want to experiment with the limit game and sit down at a 6/12 limit table. I find that it might possibly suit my style a little better than NL. I like the fact that you can see more flops and stick around for the turn more. Yes there will be sockouts such as my KK getting beat by A 10, but you can suckout more yourself. I was able to stick around twice to catch flushes on the river to win big pots. It is a different game than NL that requires a different mindset. I ended up winning $75 at that table and I think I will be back for more sometime soon.

A 60+15 SNG is looking for players, I start packing up my chips and before you know it 3 more of the players at my 6/12 table are headed over to play in the SNG. It was a fun game, which resembled the SNG that I played in with Chrissy and Dom a few weeks ago. Everybody was joking around and having fun. I found myself short stacked and go all-in blind. I get a call and tell him that I did not look so I am probably beat. He flips over Q10 and I flip them to find QJ Yippeee! I win that one. A few hands later, I do it again and everyone folds. I take a peak and it was 73. Well you know that has to be shown, so I flip it over and the table is in an uproar. On the next hand, I look down to see rockets. At this point, I have a medium stack so I can put out a regular raise, but no I decide to push all-in again and see if anybody bites. It works and I get a call from a medium stack who flips over A5, hahahaha! I end up busting out a short while later, but it was a fun and memorable game and overall day.

nice report.

it sounds like you played real well..i couldn't pick up on any mistakes

did you consider playing a little looser since everybody was playin so solid in the MTT?

i like the push with the queens...i'm assuming the pot had something like blinds T100 + T200 + antes T250 + T600 (raise) = T1150...if you had simply called...you would have added T600 to make a pot T1750...that's probably around 3/4 of your remaining stack...if you bet even half the pot on the flop...and get called...the pot is around T3500 and you're stack is then T1600...virtually demanding you move in on later streets...unless you're hopelessly beat.

the push allowed you to see all 5 cards.

It would have been hard to loosen up my game. I only got 3 raising hands in 3 hours and 1 of them I had to smooth call. I did limp into a few pots, but always missed the flops. Even though the players were solid there was 1 or 2 players contesting every raise, so blind stealing was out of the question.

The QQ push hand did not have antes so the pot was T900 when it got to me. For me to put in a nice raise to T1800 would have cost me half my stack and I would have been committed to the pot. Therefore, instead of doing that and seeing an A or K hit the flop I pushed it in. I actually wanted to take it down pre-flop or on the flop because my hand was already made and I doubted that it would have improved.

What would you have done in this situation? I have about T4500 with 6 or 7 people left in the SNG. Blinds are T200/T400 with T50 ante. I get J10o in late position and raise it up to T1000. Big blind goes all-in for T2900. It is T1900 to me with T4850 in the pot. What do you do?

I generally don't like to call all-in bets like that one...but I would struggle not too...

you're getting something like 2.5 to 1 odds...which is real nice.

you have an opportunity to increase your stack from T3500 to over T6000+...

and because you're against the big blind...I'm guessing you have 2 live cards...I'm putting the guy on a weak ace...so you're probably no worse than 2 to 1....

if you lose you got about T1600...which leaves you in push or fold mode...where you have to move in quickly

so my answer is...I'd probably fold. For me...the question I'd ask is...am i willing to go out with J-10o...if i was moving in...yes but probably no...on a call

Your argument for folding has merit, but the math forces me to call. He has the weak A and I do not improve and I lose the pot.

If I had a weak A I would have folded. That was the only hand I would have felt that I was too far behind with to call with the pot odds I was being offered.

yea...the math is a very good reason to call. what were the stack sizes at that point?

I might have been the big stack or close to it with a few mediums and smalls splashing around.

As the biggest stack...I probably would have felt more comfortable folding...I like the raise...I thought of it as a steal...if you win the pot uncontested...great... if you get called...you might get lucky and hit the flop...J-10 is a great drawing hand...but when he moved in...that is probably the time to throw the hand away...even with T3500...it sounds like you were still probably the chip leader or not far behind...I would have wanted to see if I could get a bigger hand or different spot where I could put one of the smaller stacks to the test for all their chips...or simply move up the ladder cause other stacks gotta take a stand cause the blinds/antes are so close to taking all their chips...then again I don't know what the structure was...how many places were they paying...if only one...then your play still very, very reasonable.

hey have you read Scott Fischman's new poker book, ON-LINE ACE?

I read Online Ace a couple of months ago. I got a little from it but overall I did not like it.

BTW, 2 places paid in the SNG, 400/200. Your argument for folding is valid, but I lean slightly towards calling with the pot odds. Had I won the hadn I would have been the chip leader and been able to throw my weight around.

Yea...

I trust your read in that situation.

Hey, tell me more about Fishman's book...I was thinking of buying it.

Why didn't you like it? What did you get out of it...etc?

Some of what Fischman is talking about makes sense but there are too many statements like "just feeling that card is going to come", "you can will your card to come" weird stuff like that. He also advocates not try to make 3rd place in SNG's but always shoot for first and not worry about getting ITM which leads to illogical moves when he is on the bubble. Overall, I do not think I will read it again. If you want to borrow it, I will give it to you the next time I see you.
